Westport welcomes in the New Year with music,
celebration and a spectacular sunrise
Westporters welcomed in 2001 with a
variety of private and town-sponsored events throughout town, while nearby New
York City witnessed near-record crowds in Time Square for the traditional ball
drop.
The dawn of the new year marked the
first day of the third millennium in the common era, and while the general
excitement level was not equal to the odometer-turning frenzy of last year,
great merriment and fun was found throughout the town festivities, many of which
were marked with larger-than-life cartoon signs to draw attention to them for
passers-by.
At Compo Beach, a very small turnout
was on hand to greet the first sunrise of 2001. In contrast to the dozens
of people on hand for last year's dawn celebration, which was marred by overcast
skies, this year witnessed perfect conditions for watching the sun rise over
Long Island Sound.
