Westporters Celebrate Memorial Day with a
Parade and a Multitude of Events
The Memorial Day weekend was topped off
on Monday with a gala parade honoring the sons and daughters of Westporters who
have fallen in the service of their country. Weather that threatened to
become damp and blustery gave way to fairly sunny skies and a festive atmosphere
that was sustained all along the parade route. The parade kicked off
shortly after 9AM as the first police honor guard crossed the Saugatuck River
and then proceeded down Myrtle Avenue past the reviewing stands at Town
Hall. Main Street, the town's commercial hub, stood eerily silent during
the parade; it has been more than ten years since Main Street has been used as
part of the parade route.
Parade participants included many of
the town's veterans, civic organizations and prominent figures, as well as
numerous marching bands that played spirited patriotic songs. Leading the
veterans' contingents was First Selectman Diane Goss Farrell, who often broke
from the parade route to greet people in the crowd and to press on with the
town's business. "I owe you a phone call, don't I?", she
mentioned with a smile to one person in the crowd.
The parade also included floats from
the Veterans of Foreign Wars, The local chapter of the Cancer Society, as well
as many vintage cars, some sponsored, and some just along for a fine day's ride.
Elsewhere in town, the day was marked
with rememberences at local gravesites, including those of soldiers from the War
of Independence, and festive activities at area beaches and
backyards.
