Staples' Football Wreckers Ride Darien's Blue Wave to a Convincing 22-0 Victory before an Enthusiastic Homecoming Crowd
Westport's Staples High football Wreckers defeated Darien's Blue Wave  22-0 on Homecoming Day this Saturday  with a strong ground game, timely passes and defense that seemed to be in the right place at the right time with rare exception.  The weather was iffy, but on the gridiron there were few doubts as to who was controlling the game.  After an initial Darien drive, the Wreckers took over on Darien's 91-yard line and began an uninterrupted series of first downs that culminated in their first touchdown early in the second quarter.  Senior Matt Makovsky dominated on the wings, breaking through the Darien defense to catch a second-quarter touchdown pass from Junior Quarterback Luke Dupay, while Sophomore Jesse Becker excelled up the middle with numerous strong runs through heavy traffic

While speedy Darien played a strong game, their offense was hobbled by numerous illegal procedure calls and an aerial game that fell short more than it connected, while their defense was consistently repelled by strong center-ground Wrecker advances.  A reinvigorated Blue Wave took the field after halftime with a 16-0 deficit and began a strong drive, but when a 4th-down carry fell inches short of a first down on Westport's 43-yard line, the momentum swung decisively to Westport's advantage.  The punt return from Westport landed squarely on Darien's 1-yard line, and minutes later the Blue Wave offense was pushed into their end zone for a Westport touchback score.  Darien's Jack Newton was the target of numerous successful passes, including a 35-yard advance early in the fourth quarter that threatened to put the game back in play.  But in the end the Wrecker defense was able to isolate Newton and to limit the Blue Wave's ground advance to generally negligible impact, highlighted by Sophomore Rob Krauss' interception of Darien's last serious passing attempt of the afternoon.

The large and enthusiastic Homecoming crowd enjoyed both the game and the halftime activities, which included a gymnastic cheerleading exhibition, an introduction of all of the Staples athletic team captains, and the introduction of the Homecoming court.
