Westport Socked by Third Coastal Storm of
Season
A wet and wild Winter coastal snow storm
gripped Westport and neighboring communities in a brief but powerful frenzy that
brought downed trees, power lines, scattered power outages and brief chaos to
the region.
The storm started mid-day on Monday
and continued through to the early morning hours of Tuesday, leaving Westporters
with 8-10 inches of wet and heavy snow. The combination made for very
slippery going through the evening and caused both delayed school openings for
town schools on Tuesday and widespread cancellations throughout the
region. On a relative scale, Westport was spared: towns little more than
fifteen miles away received at least twice as much snow, and Eastern Connecticut
coped with more than two feet of snow in many locales.
The Merritt Parkway was closed for
nearly an hour just south of Exit 41 Monday evening as road crews removed downed
trees that had completely blocked the major artery. Town plows were out in
force very quickly, as they have been in all of this season's storms, and had
created passable conditions by early Tuesday throughout most of the town.
A sunny and mild Tuesday morning brought snow crashing down from overloaded
trees and utility wires, adding a second wave of chaos, but by the afternoon the
mild temperatures had helped to clear away the worst of the storm from local
roads.
